Competition for Good
With the arrival of the 2014 World Cup in Brasil, we partnered with Brazilian soccer superstar Neymar Jr., his institute, and PayPal to provide access to clean water to underserved communities in all 12 cities who hosted Confederations Cup games. We carried out the first phase of this project in the five cities that hosted the FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil in June 2013 including Brasilia, Salvador, Fortaleza, Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janeiro. The project provided clean water to over 85,000 Brazilians living in the underserved communities in these areas. With PayPal’s continued support, the program’s second phase was implemented from June to December of 2014 in Porto Alegre, Curitiba, São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Natal, Recife, Fortaleza, Manaus, Cuiabá, and Brasilia.
Closing the program on World Water Day 2015, March 22nd, a total of 5,000 water filters were implemented, impacting the lives of over 125,000 people throughout Brasil.
